FAST FACTS

2008 – 2009 School Year

What is Packet Day?  It allows us the opportunity to get back all of the paper work before school begins. Most of the paper work is in this packet.  If you misplace the paper work, it is available on-line as well as in the school office beginning August 8th. Packet Day is August 12, 2008, from 2 –5 and 6 – 8 P.M. Parents will also have the opportunity to join various clubs such as our Co-op and Dad’s Club, order school essentials such as spirit shirts and sweatshirts, as well as explore various volunteer possibilities.

What do I bring to Packet Day?  Please know your pediatrician information (name and phone number), insurance information, social security number, date of last tetanus shot, name and number of two emergency contacts on the Northshore and your child’s public school district.

What if I can’t come to Packet Night?  It’s O.K.  We still love you.  Please call the office so we can work out when you can turn in the information.

Where can I purchase the school uniforms? The uniform can be purchased at School Time. School Time has a detailed list of our uniform.  The only change for this upcoming school year is the school shoe for our girls in the middle school (grades 5th, 6th, 7th).  The girls will wear the traditional black and white saddle oxfords with the white sole.  The girls are allowed to wear their old blue shoes this year only.  We do ask that when you purchase new shoes for your middle school daughter, you purchase the saddle oxfords.  Thanks!

Do I Have to Buy the Supply Packs?  While the school does make a little money off of the supply packs, we offer this as a service to you.  You do not have to order the supply pack.  If you have ordered a supply pack through the school, your child will receive a study cubby and student planner.  If you have elected to purchase the school supplies on your own, please be aware that you will need to purchase a study cubby and student planner through the school office at the beginning of school.  The costs for these items are $6.00 – (Planner - $5.00 / Cubby - $1.00).

What is Parent Workday? The Dad’s club is hosting a work day on August 9 at 8:00 A.M.  Parents are invited to help.  We will get the outside of the school ready for the opening day as well as help teachers get their rooms ready. Refreshments will be provided.

How do I find out about the school bus?  Anyone living in the Pontchartrain/Tchefuncte public school district may be able to ride the school bus.  We will have a sign up table at Packet Day with more information.  With all of the construction around our school, we strongly encourage you to sign up for bus service.

Can I join my child for the weekly Mass?  Students attend Mass every Wednesday at 9:00 A.M.  Parents are always encouraged and welcome to join their child in this holy celebration.

Where do I bring my child if he / she is in pre-K or kindergarten?  You can walk your child to his / her classroom.  Once you get comfortable dropping them off at school, you are welcome to drop them in car line, where a middle school student will escort them to their class.  Please come to the open house which will be held on August 14th at 7:00 P.M.

How does the car line work?  In the mornings you can drop your child off in the carline.  In the afternoons, it is preferred that all students (pre-k – 7th) are picked up in carline.  Simply follow the line of cars that will wind around the church and in front of the school, where helpful volunteers will call your child’s name. If you have an appointment, you can come and get your child.  However, for safety reasons we do ask that you are off the campus before afternoon carline begins.

What time does school begin and end?  All students are expected to be at school by the first bell at 7:30. A grace period of 5 minutes is allowed with the final bell rings at 7:35. Morning carline gets long at times so you really need to be at school by 7:15 to be sure your child gets to school by 7:30.  School ends at 2:40 with carpool beginning at 2:45 and is usually over by 3:00.

How does the cafeteria work? Please notice the change from last year. You pay the cafeteria in advance so you always have a positive balance in your child’s lunch account. Each child is issued a lunch number. Please keep money in the account at all times as the Archdiocese no longer allows students to charge lunch.  If students do not have lunch money in their account, we will allow them to call their parents to either bring their lunch or money.  If parents are not able to be reached, the school will lend your child money for the day.  Don’t worry, your child will never go without lunch.

Can my child bring lunch?  Yes, a lot of students do bring their own lunch and purchase milk or juice.  Cafeteria prices will be available on packet day.

Can I have lunch with my child?  Yes, of course you can have lunch with your child.  You just need to bring cash for your meal.  Unfortunately, the Archdiocese lunch program prohibits us from bringing fast food (for example, McDonalds, Subway, etc.) into the cafeteria during lunch hours.

Who do I contact if I have questions concerning the cafeteria?  Our cafeteria manager, Ms. Pat, will be available at Packet Day and can be contacted throughout the year in the cafeteria at 674-0346.

What about after-care?  After-care is available from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.  The cost is $8.00 a day if paid in advanced on a weekly basis.  The cost is $10.00 a day on a daily basis.

How can I volunteer to help at the school (cafeteria duty, carline volunteer and much, much more!)?   On Packet Day, you will have the opportunity to turn in many forms volunteering in various capacities.  We look forward to seeing you around Mary, Queen of Peace.

Are Spirit Shirts necessary?  Yes, they are worn on field trips, field day and out of uniform days.

Do you have a Web site? Yes, you can find us at www.mqpcs.org .

If I have any other questions, who can I ask?  You can call the office at 674-2466.  If it is after hours, please contact Dr. Jan Daniel Lancaster, our principal, at (504) 838-7101 or (504) 388-5528.
